A child's dance studio can quickly become a second home. To grow as a dancer, how you train is important, but the environment plays a major role. A good dance studio provides instruction, structure and a community where dancers can connect. So when it comes to choosing a dance studio, what qualities should you look for?
1. Good Communication Skills
Find a studio where they have systems in place to let you know in advance what is needed for class, payment due dates, recital/concert dates and any other information. Dance classes are an investment, not just of your money, but also your time. Find a studio where if you need to speak with someone you can in a timely manner. A website is also a great resource for communication because if you have questions, 9 times out of 10 the answer can be found on the studio website. If the studio has a "Parent Portal" where you can view your account and instructor notes, then that is icing on the cake.
2. Knowledge of Basic First Aid
No parent wants their child to get injured while participating in an activity, but it can happen. Selecting a studio where instructors and staff have basic knowledge of first aid is essential. Does the studio keep a first aid kit on hand? What is the protocol around injuries whether big or small?
3. Policy on Uniform & Dress Requirements
Not all dance studios require students to wear a "uniform." However, studios that have uniform and dress requirements show a level of structure that benefits dancers. Dancers, especially younger ones are already easily distracted. By everyone being required to wear the same leotards, tights and shoes it greatly minimizes distractions and allows everyone (dancers + instructors) the ability to focus on what is important, dance.
Also dress codes can improve confidence and create cohesiveness. When you dress the part, a lot of times it helps you feel the part. When students look like dancers, they feel like dancers and you can see this increased confidence in their posture and attitude.
Also when dancers wear the same attire they can create a bond because they feel like they are all working towards the same goal.
4. Class Size
Too many students to a class makes it hard for dancers to receive proper instruction. With small class sizes, dancers are able to get more personalized attention they deserve. This benefits the dancer as well as the instructor. The instructor is able to maintain better control of their class with a smaller amount of students.
5. Safe Environment
When talking about safety it is not enough if a studio cares only for a dancer's physical well being. Find a studio where they care for the emotional and mental well being as well. Dance is an activity where many children and teens can become discouraged or feel self consciousness if they are having a harder time than their peers. Having a studio where the instructors and staff truly care about the dancers truly helps eliminate some of those issues. Pay attention to how your dancer arrives and leaves their class. Are they excited to attend and do they come out feeling good? It's natural for dancers to leave a class feeling tired. However, constant feelings of discouragement or sadness are not good. The studio you place your child should allow you to speak to someone in a timely manner and have a friendly atmosphere.
